The 86-year-old Padma Vibhushan awardee, an environmentalist and lawyer who currently runs the Vanrai NGO in Pune, was selected for the 2010 award, which carries a citation and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh. The award was presented by Congress President Sonia Gandhi today on October 31, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh paid floral tribute to Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Delivering the welcome address, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi said “This is one of the prestigious awards in the country”.

Remembering Indira Gandhi Sonia Gandhi said that Indira Gandhi always gave importance to the principles she believed than her life. And she sacrificed her life for the nation added Sonia Gandhi. Even her opponents admitted that Indira Gandhi never compromised her principle at any cost, recalled the Congress President. During interaction Rahul Gandhi took feedback on MGNREGA and also enquired whether they get proper benefit of the scheme. He also asked whether they get the timely payment under MGNREGA. Rahul Gandhi said that UPA Government at the centre sanctions funds under various schemes for the welfare of the people and if the money is not reaching to the people, it is the weakness of the state Government. Late in the night, Rahul Gandhi slept at the local primary school building.

Earlier in the day, to feel the pulse of youths in the economically backward region of Bundelkhand during a camp organised by the Youth Congress in Jhansi, Rahul Gandhi had a detailed interaction for around two and a half hours with the youths on various important issues during Yuva Drishti training camp of the youth wing.

During the interaction he asked the YC cadres to work at the grass roots level, spread awareness among the masses about the government’s version of the Lokpal Bill and Central welfare schemes. The Congress leader made an attempt to know the opinion of the youth on the relevance of Jan Lokpal Bill proposed by Anna Hazare, and also on issues like truth, ahimsa and Satyagraha.

Rahul Gandhi spoke with the youth on the position of candidates in the forthcoming state Assembly elections. He advised the youth how to strengthen the party in the state and ways to progress through good politics while urging them to strengthen the organisation by realising their responsibilities.

During the last few years in Karnataka state a private company whose name has been in the public domain owns a valuable joint venture. The joint venture is with the Karnataka public sector company. It had brazenly violated but because that private company through its sister concerns had donated the money, they were enjoying the protection. The companies, who were used to transfer these moneys, among others in particular South West Mining which was the sister concern of the company which had Jindal Steel, which had the concession in that state, was supposed to have paid usually more for purchase of land for ex Chief Minister Yedduruppa’s son. The land value is Rs. 1 crore, they have paid Rs. 5 crores. That was one bonanza. A second company called Industrial Techno Manpower Supply, which is again a sister concern of the same group, had given another large donation. Senior Congress leader and Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Tuesday that the Congress would project Rahul Gandhi as the future leader of the party. “We are always in favour of new leadership. Rahul Gandhi is our future leader,” Mukherjee said when asked whether Congress would follow BJP in their attempt to focus on new faces for future leaders.

NDA government created loot of public sector undertakings: Congress

Since BJP-led NDA was an opportunistic alliance, it had no workable agenda for development, increasing employment or bringing much need administrative reforms.  It had not sense of direction. It started selling out national assets to raise finance. The Centre raised Rs.11,260.23 crore from the sale of 31 PSU’s, including 18 hotels of the Indian Tourism Development Corporation and 3 of the Hotel Corporation of India, since the sale of Modern Foods in January 2000. 39 PSU’s were sold in 10 states. Most of these PSUs were sold to 'favourites' of the Vajpayee Government. The erstwhile Disinvestment Commission had specifically warned against the option of bridging the budget deficit by raking in money from disinvestments. On the contrary Disinvestment Commission wanted the proceeds of disinvestment to be used for financing infrastructure, restructuring of loss-making PSU’s or for retiring public debt. That was the policy followed by the previous Congress governments. But BJP-led NDA government reversed that.  The most blatant cases of erosion of public money through disinvestment were BALCO, HUDCO, Centaur Hotel.

Towering effigies of demon king Ravana along with his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran were consigned to flames among splendid fireworks as people celebrated Dussehra across the city symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Dussehra coincided with the immersion of Durga idols in the Yamuna river, marking the end of the puja festival.
Dussehra also marked the beginning of a 20-day period that will culminate with Diwali, the festival of lights. Standing atop trucks, devotees and enthusiasts dressed as Ram, Ravana and their followers recreated the mythological war between Hindu god and the demon king depicted in the epic Ramayana.
Dussehra was celebrated with deep fervour and enthusiasm in different parts of Delhi and in other parts of the country on Sunday.

At best, only a token reservation has been made. Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1989 said, "It is impossible for the weaker sections of society to secure adequate representation, full participation and an equitable share of the benefits of municipal administration, unless there are reserved seats for Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribes and substantial seats for women." It is also important that these Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and women are elected and not nominated, as otherwise they will not be able to achieve their full potential.  Congress is working to secure adequate representation on the basis of reservation of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes. This is being done on the same lines as done in the Panchayati Raj legislation. Besides, Congress has already got Women Reservation Bill which secures 33% reservations for women in legislative bodies through Rajya Sabha. This is a major achievement and confirms commitment of Congress party for securing better deal for country’s women.

For example, the Laghu Udyog Bharti, who’s "Margdarshak" is RSS Chief K. S. Sudarshan, was allotted 571.2 square yards plot at Kotla Road, Rouse Avenue, in New Delhi. Other organizations, like the Vaish Aggarwal Education Society also got 1.9 acres land due to the organization’s proximity with Union Minister Vijay Goel, who is also the society’s General Secretary.

NDA did not take up Women’s Reservation Bill: Congress

BJP-led NDA government managed to form government in 1998 by subterfuges and underhand mechanism.  It was an opportunistic alliance of parties who had nothing in common.  There was no agenda for the country.  After promising the women of India that they would be given legislative reservation, the NDA recanted on its promise. It is only the Congress party, which has a demonstrated track record for empowering women. The Congress fulfilled Rajiv Gandhi's dream to provide 33 percent reservation for women in Panchayats and Nagarpalikas. For almost 6 years, Vajpayee's promise remained just that, a promise. Even after Congress time and again promised its full cooperation, the NDA did not reconcile its own differences. It is worth recalling that as soon as people mandated Congress again in 2004 to form government, it got the Women Reservation Bill cleared through the Rajaya Sabha even though other political parties gave out that they would not cooperate. Thus it is demonstrably clear that only Congress is working for empowerment of women.
