NDA did not take up Women’s Reservation Bill: Congress

BJP-led NDA government managed to form government in 1998 by subterfuges and underhand mechanism.  It was an opportunistic alliance of parties who had nothing in common.  There was no agenda for the country.  After promising the women of India that they would be given legislative reservation, the NDA recanted on its promise. It is only the Congress party, which has a demonstrated track record for empowering women. The Congress fulfilled Rajiv Gandhi's dream to provide 33 percent reservation for women in Panchayats and Nagarpalikas. For almost 6 years, Vajpayee's promise remained just that, a promise. Even after Congress time and again promised its full cooperation, the NDA did not reconcile its own differences. It is worth recalling that as soon as people mandated Congress again in 2004 to form government, it got the Women Reservation Bill cleared through the Rajaya Sabha even though other political parties gave out that they would not cooperate. Thus it is demonstrably clear that only Congress is working for empowerment of women.
