Congress for participation of women in legislative bodies

It is a matter of concern that for reservation for women neither any state nor any other political party has done justice to the silent half of the country's population. At best, only a token reservation has been made. Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1989 said, "It is impossible for the weaker sections of society to secure adequate representation, full participation and an equitable share of the benefits of municipal administration, unless there are reserved seats for Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribes and substantial seats for women." It is also important that these Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and women are elected and not nominated, as otherwise they will not be able to achieve their full potential.  Congress is working to secure adequate representation on the basis of reservation of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes. This is being done on the same lines as done in the Panchayati Raj legislation. Besides, Congress has already got Women Reservation Bill which secures 33% reservations for women in legislative bodies through Rajya Sabha. This is a major achievement and confirms commitment of Congress party for securing better deal for country’s women.
