Criticising non-Congress leaders, Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav, in particular, for not going to the people to know their problems, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has said that only Congress (I) has reached out to the people in their hour of need. “Mayawati is your Chief Minister for the past five years. Mulayam Singh Yadav was your Chief Minster thrice. Did any one of them come to you in the past five years?” asked Rahul Gandhi while addressing a huge Congress rally in Hardoi as part of his Congress campaign in Uttar Pradesh.
“When the poor farmers in the drought-hiot Bundelkhand region were crying for help and support, I had visited the region,” said Rahul Gandhi and alleged that neither Mayawati nor Mulayam visited the people in distress. How then these non-Congress parties could talk about the issues of the people or the development, without going among them and talking to them, Rahul Gandhi wondered.
“It was the responsibility of the state government to help them out. But it did nothing” said Rahul Gandhi. Congress (I)-led UPA government at the Centre made available a relief package of Rs 8,000 crores to help the people of Bundelkhand, informed the Congress leader. “But the money was gobbled up by the magic elephant sitting in Lucknow and the people got nothing” said Rahul Gandhi.
Arguing that these non-Congress parties were not interested in the welfare of the people, Rahul Gandhi asked the people support Congress (I) and assured that a Congress government would bring back the state of Uttar Pradesh on the track of development.
