Attacking Mayawati government for rampant corruption in Public Distribution Scheme (PDS), Rahul Gandhi has said this has led to a mega PDS scam running into thousands of crores. The items meant for distribution to people belonging to BPL category are being sold in black market, said Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi while campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections. Such items meant for poor of BPL category are required to be sold through authorized PDS shops at subsidized rate, he added. Under this scheme every month poor living below poverty line are entitled to 35 Kgs of rice or wheat while those belonging to above poverty line are entitled to 15 Kgs of rice or wheat, Rahul Gandhi further said. But the benefits of this scheme are not reaching the poor people. Instead in many districts the PDS items are being sold in black market in the neighboring states. During 2010-2011 Center released quantity of 5,28,395 tons of consumables to Uttar Pradesh. But most of this quantity disappeared in black market leading to a mega scam of Rs 200,000 crores, said Rahul Gandhi. Urging the people to oust her corrupt government, Rahul Gandhi promised that this time if Congress (I) is voted to power it would provide corruption-free government and ensure that benefits of the welfare schemes reach the poor.
