Mayawati betrayed women in UP: Rahul Gandhi

Pointing to apathy of Mayawati towards the condition of women in the state, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has blamed her for the sorry plight of women in Uttar Pradesh.  “Although this state is ruled by a woman chief minister, there is no one to hear the voice of women,” said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Jaunpur on February 12 for UP Assembly elections. Highlighting that Congress (I) made a provision for representation of women in panchayats but it is not being implemented in its true spirit by Mayawati government. Referring to an example of raw deal being given to women in the state, Rahul Gandhi said, “I was told by an old woman how her agricultural land was forcibly acquired for some builders. When the builder demanded immediate vacation of the plot, the woman complained to the local police station but it had no effect. Police not only refused to intervene but even went to the extent of setting fire to the standing crop on the poor woman's land.”  Assuring the people that his party would continue to work for the welfare of all including women, Rahul Gandhi urged them this time to vote for Congress (I) to bring a pro-people government in UP.
