Mayawati doesn’t know plight of poor: Rahul Gandhi

Attacking Mayawati for having come to power on the vote of the poor but thereafter doing nothing for them, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said she is responsible for the plight of the poor in UP. She does not know the sufferings of the poor, Rahul Gandhi said while campaigning for the ongoing Assembly elections. She has no right or legitimacy to call herself as messiah of dalit or poor for she has worked against their interest, he further said. Centre has been sending funds for welfare schemes for the poor of UP. Instead of ensuring that the money reached the needy poor, BSP ministers pocketed that money. Highlighting that she neither meets poor nor wants to know their problems, Rahul Gandhi said she failed to work for the welfare of the poor and development of the state.  He urged the people to reject Mayawati’s BSP and vote for Congress (I) Party.  He assured that a government of the poor by Congress (I) will work for their welfare and ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach them.

All chief ministers in the last two decades thought that people of UP were fool and they had no understanding of their own, Rahul Gandhi said during a public meeting in Jewar, Noida on February 23 for the ongoing Assembly elections. “They have been making false promises to the voters of UP and come into power. And once they come into power all they do is exploit the resources and have fun,” he further said.
It is time to stop this rut and the people’s need for progress and development must be respected, he added.  Highlighting that the only way forward was to put Congress (I) in driver’s seat in Lucknow, Rahul Gandhi fervently appealed to the people to vote for Congress (I) to make this possible. Assuring fast track development he said, “Give us 5 years and we will show you what we can do. We will change the face of the state and you will be able to see the impact in five years,” he added.

Referring to Mulayam Singh’s poll promise, Rahul Gandhi said, “Mulayam Singh Ji also promises that he would convert Bundelkhand to Israel. No one in Bundelkhand wants Israel. They want electricity, water and sufficient food. But he talks about Israel. He was the Chief Minister for three terms. What did he do for them? When people of drought-hit Bundelkhand were crying for help where was he? I had gone to different villages in the region. I could see neither Mulayam Ji nor Mayawati there. Mayawati Ji was the Chief Minister, but never visited Bundelkhand,” asserted the Congress General Secretary.

Rahul Gandhi added, “Congress implemented Sachar Commission’s recommendations. When we sent the money for scholarship to Uttar Pradesh that got vanished in Lucknow. The funds reach Kerala and Tamil Nadu but the same did not reach the people in UP.”

“When media persons had asked Mulayam Ji about his stand on reservation, he did not utter any word. But when Congress, Manmohan Singh Ji and Sonia Ji went ahead with reservation, he complained that it was inadequate. He was the Chief Minister in UP thrice. Why did not he do anything then? When Rasheed Masood Ji talked about reservation he was expelled from SP,” said the Congress leader questioning the double speak of SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on the issue of Muslim reservation.
