Matured Sonia Gandhi leads from the front

Congress President Sonia Gandhi is normally a cool person who believes in action rather than talking much. But in this monsoon session, we saw an aggressive Sonia Gandhi who has been directing the Congress MPs to take on the Opposition defending the ruling alliance.

On the first day of the monsoon session, the UPA chairperson forced senior BJP leader L K Advani to withdraw an objectionable comment made by him terming the UPA as illegitimate, from his speech during an adjournment motion against the government. Next day, she intervened effectively when Shailendra Kumar from the Samajwadi Party raised the issue of ensuring reservations in promotions for SC/ST government servants. Further during a discussion on the killing of six Sikhs in a US Gurudwara, Sonia Gandhi prompted Congress MPs and even parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal to aggressively defend the party against the Akali Dal's accusations that Congress hadn't done much for the Sikhs.

It is a fact that Congress President was never seen so aggressive. But this time, she did the correct job as the chairperson of Congress-led UPA.  She always realised that it is her responsibility o defend the ruling coalition whenever it is under attack. When BJP leader LK Advani called UPA illegitimate, Sonia Gandhi correctly pointed out that he went beyond the limit of parliamentary discipline and she spearheaded the protest against L K Advani in Lok Sabha, forcing the senior BJP leader to unconditionally withdraw his remark.

Perfect and matured intervention by Sonia Gandhi forces Advani to withdraw his remarks against UPA

Congress President and UPA Chairperson was never seen so aggressive. As the chairperson of Congress-led UPA, she did what she should have done. When BJP leader LK Advani called UPA illegitimate, Sonia Gandhi correctly pointed out that he went beyond the limit of discipline and she shed her usual reticence and spearheaded the protest against L K Advani in Lok Sabha, forcing the BJP veteran to unconditionally withdraw his disparaging reference to UPA government that questioned its legitimacy.

Sonia Gandhi and Congress benches erupted in protests when Advani, initiating a discussion on the recent ethnic violence in lower Assam, suggested that the UPA had lost its legitimacy after the controversial trust vote necessitated by the Left's withdrawal of support over the Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008.

The unwanted comment by by Advani naturally irritated the UPA chairperson and she furiously gesticulated towards the BJP benches. Taking a cue from her, Congress MPs interrupted Advani and insisted that the reference be withdrawn, rejecting Advani's explanation that his attack was directed at UPA-I rather than the current dispensation.

Sonia Gandhi made it clear to BJP benches that she was not willing to settle for anything less than an outright withdrawal of the remark, revealing an assertive side that is not usually visible. She has on occasions reacted to Opposition provocations, but on Wednesday showed sustained aggression till Advani bowed to the Speaker's advice and withdrew his barbed comment. Sonia Gandhi displayed the perfect quality of a matured leader.

With the uncharacteristic display of aggression, Sonia Gandhi seemed to fill the void that President Pranab Mukherjee has left. As leader of the House, it would have been left to Mukherjee to take on the BJP leader by intervening and challenging the disparaging reference to the 2008 confidence vote and description of the subsequent UPA-II government as an illicit entity. The Congress President again showed her class when she forced party MPs from Telangana to abort their plan to disrupt the House with their demand for statehood for the region.

A stern-looking Sonia Gandhi urged Congress MPs from Telangana not to disrupt proceedings. After the T-block raised slogans, Sonia Gandhi told the MPs that their behaviour is unacceptable, saying it gave the Opposition an opportunity to allege Congress is orchestrating sloganeering to stall Parliament.

Mincing no words, Sonia told the Congress MPs that they should not embarrass the party. Her intervention helped the government avoid sniping from within.

On a day marked with protests and uproar in the House, it was Sonia Gandhi who scored full points by displaying one of her best performances as a parliamentarian.

Rahul Gandhi: I am not bothered about elections, I want youth outfits to be strong

Rahul Gandhi visits Dalit village in Allahabad

Rahul Gandhi has done it again. It has been his habit since long to visit villages and interact with the local people, wherever he goes.  During his one-day visit to Allahabad, too he did not miss the opportunity. The Congress General Secretary visited a Dalit village in the city, interacted with the locals there and assured them all possible help to find solutions for their issues.

Later, Rahul Gandhi addressed a seminar on "Dreams of Neglected Communities in Democracy" at GB Pant Institute of Social Sciences. "I used to dream of bringing big changes in the society and politics. But after joining it, I found that the things were more difficult than I had thought," he said.

The Congress MP from Amethi underlined that his ultimate wish was to see major social changes. He said he was practicing social equality in recent years with the hope that the things would improve gradually.

Rahul Gandhi also launched various health services in the city.

Rahul Gandhi in Allahabad, launches health services

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi visited Allahabad on Wednesday to attend a series of programmes organised by different institutions. Rahul Gandhi arrived at Bamrauli airport at around 1pm and was received by state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and other Congress leaders.

Rahul Gandhi went straight to the Kamla Nehru Memorial hospital where he dedicated a Micro Selectron HDR Brachytherapy Equipment and Oncentra Master Plan 3 D External Beam, IMRT TPS for Cancer Treatment machine to the nation. He also inaugurated the Rajiv Gandhi wing in the hospital comprising ICU, nephro Dialysis unit and care and post operative ward.

The Congress MP from Amethi also interacted with the faculty members and staff of the hospital and attended a cultural programme organised by the Nehru Memorial Trust. Rahul Gandhi also visited his ancestral home, Swaraj Bhawan, where he met several delegations of local leaders. A delegation of Congressmen, National Students Union of India and trade union leaders also called on Rahul Gandhi and gave him a memorandum.

From Swaraj Bhawan, Rahul Gandhi went to a slum in Pura Padain and interacted with the slum dwellers. After that the congress leader visited GB Pant Social Science Institute, Jhunsi, where he was scheduled to take part in a Lokgyani conference on the theme 'Democracy and Dreams of the Marginals'. Intellectuals of various marginalised communities and community leaders involved in social reforms participated in the seminar.
